  • Pearl Harbor
  • The First Sighting
  • Japanese submarine! Japanese submarine!
  • Tensions had been strong between the United States and Japan for decades. This was because The United States was very closely allied with China, and China and Japan had been in conflict for years.
  • The Attack
  • Pearl Harbor, an American Navy base near Honolulu Hawaii, is roughly 2,000 miles away from US mainland, and about 4,000 miles away from Japan. As a remote location, no one expected an attack. This meant is was considerably undefended, and to the Japanese, an incredibly easy target.
  • The USS Arizona and The Oklahoma
  • On December 7th, 1941, at about 4am, a Japanese submarine was seen near Pearl Harbor. Two hours later, it was reported that an American ship had fired and sunk the submarine. This was the first shot of the Pearl Harbor attack, and the first shot America fired for WW2.
  • Joining World War 2
  • America has joined the war.
  • Just before 8am, the first wave of over 200 Japanese aircraft arrived. An hour later, the second and final wave arrived. Although causing lots of damage, it was not as successful as the first wave.
  • The USS Arizona, filled with 1000 men, was sunk by a 1,800lb bomb, trapping everyone inside as it sunk. The Oklahoma was sunk by torpedoes, sinking another 400 men. There were a total of about 3,400 casualties from the attack. Luckily, the Pacific Fleet was not scathed, as they weren't at Pearl Harbor on the morning of the attack.
  • Japan's original intent of the attack was to scare the United States into lifting the economic sanctions held against them. Instead, Canada, feeling threatened by the nearby attack, officially joined the war on December 7th. The United States followed, joining December 8th.
