Storyboard Text

  • "What would you have me do?"
  • "As you will, I would have it. I want you living, John. That's sure."
  • "God be praised! It is a providence! He will confess! Proctor will confess!"
  • "Do as you will, do as you will!"
  • "Why do you cry it? It is evil, is it not? It is evil!" "Why must it be written?"
  • "Mr. Proctor, have you seen the Devil in your life?,,,Did you see the Devil?"

  • "Mr. Proctor, when the Devil came to you did you see Rebecca Nurse in his company?"
  • Proctor is left alone with Elizabeth in the courtroom for a moment. She has been asked to talk him into confessing, but she only agrees to speak with him. John is torn between lying to live or telling the truth to die. 
  • "You have all witnessed it-it is enough."
  • "Oh John-God send his mercy on you!"
  • "Man you will hang! You cannot!"
  • John decides he wants to live and will confess. Danforth is relieved and grateful. He calls for Cheever to bring a pen, ink and paper to record John's confession. John realizes they want to post it on the church for all to see.
  • "Let you fear nothing! Another judgement waits us all!"
  • "You will give me your honest confession in my hand, or I cannot save you from the rope."
  • Danforth questions John as Cheevers takes dictation. Rebecca Nurse is brought in to witness John's "good example" so that she might confess also.
  • John answers the questions truthfully and Danforth gets upset. John refuses to condemn his neighbors. But he has confessed, so Hale encourages Danforth to quickly let John sign his confession. John does not want to put his name to the document.
  • "Excellency, it is enough he confess himself. Let him sign it, let him sign it"
  • Proctor signs the document, but then rips it up. He will not sign himself to lies. He has given them his soul, but wants to at least keep his good name. He is resigned to his fate but feels he has at least done some good in not letting the court use him to make others follow suit and confess lies.
  • Parris tries to convince Elizabeth to get him to change his mind, as does Hale. She will not make him do evil, even to save himself. The people who have been killed already die innocently and it discredits the court. The drums roll and John is escorted to the gallows...
  • "Woman plead with him!"
  • "He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him!"
