The Cay
Storyboard Text
- The Cay takes place in Curacao an island in the Caribbean in the year 1942 during World War 2
- The main character and narrator is Phillip. He is 11 years old and moved with his family to Curacao from Virginia. He lives with his mother and father.
- German submarines are using torpedoes to sink ships and attack others. Those living on the island are scared that they will be attacked by the Germans.
- While watching a tanker leave the harbor, Phillip and his dad see the tanker get hit by a torpedo and sink. The family decides that to stay safe, Phillip and his mother must leave the island.
- Phillip and his mother leave the island. Phillip is sad to leave but his mother thinks that they will be safe. A torpedo hits the boat they are on... something hits Phillip's head. Everyone plunges into the water
- Phillip wakes up on a raft with a black man name Timothy and his cat named Stew. Timothy has a funny accent- he says he doesn't know where they are. Phillip is very upset. His head starts to hurt badly.
- Phillip begins to get to know Timothy. He thinks about how his mother use to speak about people that were a different race. When Phillip wakes up, he can no longer see because of his head injury. He is now blind.
- Finally they spot land. Phillip is so excited that he falls into shark infested water. Timothy pulls him up and they decide to land on the "very small island"
- From dis islan', we will get help. Be true, I swear..."
- Phillip, Timothy and Stew Cat make it to the small island or Cay. Timothy says they need to find a place to camp- this makes Phillip sad because he realizes they won't be leaving anytime soon.
- Timothy leaves to find a place to camp. Phillip gets very scared- he can not see anything! When Timothy returns, Phillip cries and tells Timothy never to leave him alone again.
- Never leave me alone, Timothy
- D'place I am thinking of is call Debil's Mout'. With dese sharp coral banks on either side, runnin' maybe 40-50 miles...
- Timothy builds a shelter. Timothy accidently says to Phillip "look at the hut!"

- Timothy uses his survival skills and brings back lobster to eat! They they write HELP in the sand in case a plane flies overhead.
- Timothy makes rope to help lead Phillip to the fire incse he is left alone. This strategy will also help Phillip begin to learn his way around the island.
- Phillip and Timothy get into a fight. Phillip is upset that he is blind and takes it out on Timothy. They make up and then Timothy teaches Phillip how to make a mat from straw so he can start to help out around the camp.
- Phillip begins to use a stick as a cane to move around the island, since he can not see. Phillip wishes he could see the island...
- Phillip and Timothy have an important conversation...
- Why are the fish different colors? I true don't know,Phillip but I believe beneath the skin we are all the same.
- Why do people have different color skin?
- There is a feast in the trees- coconuts.
- Phillip doesn't have the courage to climb the tree.
- When complaining about not being rescued, Timothy says maybe they are cursed by a "voodoo" or bad spirit. He thinks maybe Stew Cat is d'jumbi". This scares Phillip.
- Phillip wakes up one morning and finds that Timothy is very sick. He has malaria. He seems like he is crazy- he has a fever and does not look good. Phillip says he never really was the same...
- Timothy teaches Phillip how to fish. Phillip is excited by this. He uses his sense other than sight to be successful fishing.
- Phillip finally faces his fear and climbs the coconut tree. Phillip and Timothy have really bonded and become friends. Phillip understands that people are people no matter their race.
- A hurricane is coming Timothy says. They get ready for very bad weather. Phillip is nervous. He is scared for him, Timothy and Stew Cat. Timothy has them eat a very big meal because things are about to get dangerous...
- The hurricane rages... Timothy protects Phillip and Stew Cat but this puts him in even more danger. Phillip blacks out and when he wakes up, Timothy is injured.
- Timothy was injured from the hurricane and dies. Phillip thinks "I am blind and alone and on a forgotten cay.
- Phillip digs a grave for Timothy, buries him and thanks him for everything he taught him.
- Birds return to the cay and Phillip is attacked by them... Stew Cat helps him defend himself. Phillip starts to use the survival skills Timothy taught him. He needs to find food...
- Phillip bravely dives under water and catches a langosta. When he dives again, he is bit. He returns to the surface and is ok but bleeding. He thinks it was a moray eel that bit him.
- Phillip hears a plane overhead and quickly starts a fire. The plane disappears.... Phillip is devastated. Phillip wishes Timothy took him with him.
- One day Phillip hears noises like explosions. He thinks it must be a submarine. He uses bundles of oily sea grapes to make his fire have dark smoke...
- Phillip hears another plane go overhead. He yells out "Timothy they've come!" However, the plane disappears again.
- Phillip suddenly hears bells and voices. A small boat has come to rescue him. When he says that he was on the SS Hato they do not believe him because it was sunk in April and it is now August.
- Phillip and Stew Cat are finally rescued from The Cay.
- Phillip is reunited with his mother and father. He has an operation on his eyes and luckily gets his eyesight back. Phillip vows to some day return to the island he shared with Timothy. He will never forget what happened to him, or his friend Timothy.
