  • American imperialism resulted in the exchange of traditions, cultural ideas, and customs. This allowed Americans to broaden their horizons and open door notes were made to allow the US to trade with China. The US has many protectorate which was a state that is controlled and protected by another sovereign state.

  • Puerto Rican's had gained the right to self govern themselves and less than a year later the US had come in and took the autonomy away. The Foraker Act was a civil law that established a civilian government. The US wanted Puerto Rico because it was an outlet for manufactured goods and a key naval station in the Caribbean.

  • The US helped Cuba win independence from Spain through the platt amendment. This amendment states that all treaties in Cuba had to go through the US senate for approval. This also stated that the US had the right to interfere in Cuban affairs.
  • A bloody war broke out called the Philippine-American war. Emilio Aguinaldo led a revolutionary movement against the Spanish colonial government in the Philippines. He achieved independence of the Philippines from Spain and was elected the first president of the new republic under the Malolos Congress.
  • Imperialism in China had a negative effect not only on the economy but also the population through public instability. Many rebellions broke out during this time but a very paramount rebellion was the Boxer Rebellion. This was an uprising against foreigners that occurred in China about 1900, begun by peasants but eventually supported by the government.
