'TURNING POINT'of their friendship

'COMMON LINK' snapped

Author goes 'ABROAD' for further studies

Grandmother's Love for author never ends..

Grandmother falls ill and in the end 'PASSES AWAY'

The author (KHUSHWANT SINGH) and his grandmother were great friends. His parents had left him with her as they went to the city

When the author's parents had settled in the city, they sent for them. Although they shared the same room but they saw less of each other and their interaction reduced with the passage of time.

Their common link of friendship was snapped as the author went up to the UNIVERSITY as he was given a room of his own. The grandmother accepted her seclusion with resignation.

When the author went for abroad studies , he was sure that she would be upset and believed that she would be no more when he came back after 5 years.

The author's grandmother clasped him in her arms when he came back after. She did not pray and instead got an old drum and statred to sing.

The next morning she was taken ill, She grandmother believed that her end was near and told us that she wanted to close the last chapter of her life she had omited to pray.

His grandmother used to wake him up and get him ready to school. They went to school and fed street dogs on their way.

I started going to an English school in a motor bus.

There were no dogs in the streets and she took to feeding sparrows in the courtyard.

She did not believe in things taught at English school and they Rarely taked to him..

Their bond weakened, the grandmother rarely left her spinning wheel to talk to anyone and sat by reciting prayers all day. She relaxed for a while to feed the sparrows.

She thumped the sagging skins of the dilapidated drum and sang the homecoming of the warriors. That was the first time she didn't pray.

she did not waste her time talking to anyone, She laid peacefully in bed praying and telling her beads.

The grandmother came to leave him at the station ,she kissed his forehead. She was not sentimental and her fingers were busy telling the beads of her rosary.
