- Contribution:Discovering the tiny boxlike sections on a cork, Hooke began to understand that cells are the smallest units of life.

- Contribution:Brown discovered the nucleus in the cell.

- Matthias Schleiden
- Contribution:Schleiden came to the conclusion that all plant tissues are made of cells and an embryonic plant came from a single cell. He declared that the basic building block of plant matter are cells.

- Contribution:Schwann proposed the cell theory, stating that all plant and animal tissues are composed of cells. Also that all cells in an organism are identical.

- Contribution:Virchow made it more clear that diseases occur at the cellular level. He came to this conclusion using the theory that all cells come from pre-existing cells.
