1990 - Iraq accuses Kuwait of drilling into an Iraqi oil field and stealing. They used this excuse to invade.
1991 - Saddam Hussein continued to build up Iraq’s military.
1991 - The Kuwaiti oil fires burned out of control because of the dangers of sending in firefighting crews. Land mines had been placed in areas around the oil wells, and a military cleaning of the areas was necessary before the fires could be put out.
The initial conflict to expel Iraqi troops from Kuwait began with an aerial and naval bombardment on January 17th, 1991.
This was followed by a ground assault on February 24th.
September 11, 2001 - Terrorist attack on US soil, against the World Trade Center in New York City.
2003 - The UN passes economic sanctions against Iraq. When those failed, the U.S. led a coalition of forces in the Persian Gulf War, forcing the Iraqis out of Kuwait.
2004 - Political power in Iraq was transferred to the Iraqis.
2005 - Iraq voted in the first multi-party election they’d had in 50 years.
