- 1990 - Iraq accuses Kuwait of drilling into an Iraqi oil field and stealing. They used this excuse to invade.
- 1991 - Saddam Hussein continued to build up Iraq’s military.
- 1991 - The Kuwaiti oil fires burned out of control because of the dangers of sending in firefighting crews. Land mines had been placed in areas around the oil wells, and a military cleaning of the areas was necessary before the fires could be put out.
- The initial conflict to expel Iraqi troops from Kuwait began with an aerial and naval bombardment on January 17th, 1991.
- This was followed by a ground assault on February 24th.
- September 11, 2001 - Terrorist attack on US soil, against the World Trade Center in New York City.
- 2003 - The UN passes economic sanctions against Iraq. When those failed, the U.S. led a coalition of forces in the Persian Gulf War, forcing the Iraqis out of Kuwait.
- 2004 - Political power in Iraq was transferred to the Iraqis.
- 2005 - Iraq voted in the first multi-party election they’d had in 50 years.
- 2006 - Saddam Hussein was hung.
