Storyboard Text

  • John Clayton: Earl of Greystoke and his wife, Alice: Countess of Greystoke are marooned on the west coast of Africa where John Clayton II is born. The infant's mother dies of illness and soon after, his father is killed by Kerchack: King of the Apes.
  • A female ape, Kala, who had just lost her own child due to rough handling, finds and adopts John Clayton II as her own son and makes sure to handle him with more care than her previous child. The baby is then named Tarzan meaning 'White Skin' in the ape language. The other apes see how weak he is compared to baby apes, but Kala isolates herself from the apes to protect him.
  • Tarzan grows up strong, but not nearly as strong as the other apes. His advantage over the other beasts of the jungle is his cunning and his ability to use tools and weopons such as the bow and arrow which he snatched from a village and his father's hunting knife which he found in his parent's old abandon hut. He even used his parent's books to teach himself to read and write English, but has no way of knowing how to speak it. He defeats many beasts of the jungle with his wit and weopons, and even kills Kerchack in combat. Tarzan takes Kerchack's place as King of the Apes.
  • Years later, Tarzan spies on people who are marooned on the coast. He makes it his duty to protect them, but is too afraid to interact with them. He eventually rescues a young woman of the group, Jane and falls in love with her. Jane claims to herself that she is in love with her rescuer as well. One of the other marooned, William Cecil Clayton, grows a bitter jealousy over Tarzan despite how he has rescued them from perils several times. Niether does Tarzan or William know that they are actually cousins.
  • Jane and William are rescued by a boat, but Jane is saddened to have to leave Tarzan behind who went off to rescue D'Arnot, a naval officer who was lost in the jungle, in return, D'Arnot teaches Tarzan to speak French. They journey through the jungle and eventually they make it back to civilization where Tarzan learns English as well and quickly adapts to the civilized world. D'Arnot finds that Tarzan is, in fact, the true Earl of Greystoke and helps to get him legal documents to prove it via fingerprint tests.
  • To Tarzan's suprise, Jane has agreed to marry William Clayton. And to the reader's suprise, Tarzan accepts this, only wanting Jane to be happy with the man she chose to be her husband. Tarzan recieves a letter from D'Arnot telling him that he now has a document that proves he is the true Earl of Greystoke and would be the legal owner of the estate, but Tarzan tells everyone that he was born in the jungle, his mother was an ape and he never knew his father.
