Macbeth and Banquo come upon the witches and shrink in horror at the sight of the old women. The witches hail Macbeth as thane of Glamis and as thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is baffled by this second title. The witches also declare that Macbeth will be king one day, then they turned their attention to Banquo, and tell him that he will never be king but that his children will sit upon the throne.

At the king’s palace, Duncan hears reports of Cawdor’s execution from his son Malcolm, who says that Cawdor died nobly. Duncan thanks Macbeth and Banquo for their heroism in the battle. Duncan announces his intention to name Malcolm the heir to his throne. Macbeth shows his joy but realizes that Malcolm now stands between him and the crown.
Lady Macbeth reads to herself a letter she has received from Macbeth that shows Macbeth’s promotion to the thaneship of Cawdor and details his meeting with the witches. Lady Macbeth knows Macbeth is ambitious, but fears he is too kind to make himself king.
King Duncan arrives at Macbeth‘s castle and is welcomed by Lady Macbeth. Macbeth has doubts about the murder and declares to Lady Macbeth that it should not go ahead, Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to go ahead saying they can blame Duncan‘s attendants.
