- "A sudden hush fell on the crowd as Mr. Summers cleared his throat and looked at the list." This quote helps show that there was tension between everyone before the lottery started. It fell into an eerie silence one the drawing was about to start. The man in each family would go up and draw for their family once their last name was called.
- Tessie's death
- IT'S NOT FAIR!
- This cell shows the curiosity everyone is feeling during the drawing. No one knows who will get chosen. The quote "Suddenly, all the women began to speak at once, saving. 'Who is it?' 'Who's got it?' 'Is it the Dunbars?' 'Is it the Watsons?'" shows how everyone is on edge about the drawing. It gives a bit of tension too since it could be anyone at this point.
- " 'It's Tessie,' Mr. Summers said, and his voice was hushed." (Line 302) This quote from the story is the breaking announcement on who was chosen in the lottery. It's a surprising moment for everyone because they knew that Tessie's family had been chosen but didn't know who out of her family would be chosen until now. Tessie doesn't believe this lottery was fair in the first place so she is also surprised at the results.
- This cell shows the final surprise of the story. The last line of the story says " 'It isn't fair, it isn't right,' Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her." (Lines 328-329) This quote is Tessie expressing how the lottery drawing wasn't fair and that her being chosen was rigged. The whole purpose of the lottery is to regulate the population of their little town every year. The result of drawing the marked paper is getting stoned to death.
