  • Cause
  • Battle of Marathon
  • Pheidippides
  • The Persians conquered the sea in Ionia. The Ionians revolted and Athens sent ships to support the revolt. The revolt lost but Darius the Great, the Persian king, was still so mad that vowed to destroy Athens in revenge.
  • Thermopylae
  • 25,000 Persians ride across Aegeon sea to Marathon and are met with 10,000 Athenians waiting for them. The Persians lost 6,000 men and Athens lost 200 men, so Athens won that battle.
  • Battle of Plateau
  • Athens won, but they realized their city is now defenseless. They sent a young runner, Pheidippides, to tell Athens the news. Pheidippides ran 26.2 miles, told them the news, and then died. When the Persians got there, they found Athens defended, and then retreated.
  • Delian League
  • To hold off the Persians, 7,000 Greeks (including 300 Spartans) blocked a narrow mountain path. They managed to hold off the advance for 3 days. The Spartans stayed while the other Greek city-states retreated. All the Spartans died, but they saved Athens in the end.
  • While the Spartans held the Persians back the Athenians abandoned their city and took the battle to sea. Xerxes (Darius' son) sets Athens on fire then sends warships to the narrow canal the Athenians were positioned in. Xerxes lost 1/3 of his fleet and Athens won the Battle of Plateau.
  • Greek city-states form alliances to defeat the Persians, successfully driving them out. Most city-states vow to join together if Persia ever attacks again.
