  • Hey, I'm Alvin. I have a rare genetic mutation called albinism. Albinism is a genetic mutation that causes me to lose the pigmentation in my skin and hair. So I turn out looking pale and white.
  • Personally, I don't like genetic engineering because in most cases it is unnecessary such as the scientists that created the Vacanti Mouse. However, according to Your Genome, organisms like salmon that are modified to mature faster to increase the population. Salmon are also genetically modified so that they are more nutritious.
  • More specifically, there are types of genetic engineering like selective breeding. Something cool about selective breeding is that sheepdogs are breed using this method.
  • Selective Breeding is great because humans don't interact with the organism's genes directly.
  • GM0s or Genetically Modified Organisms are organisms that have been modified with traits that wouldn't normally occur in nature. GMOs are freaky to me becuase nature shouldn't be messed with. However, GMOs are pretty cool because they can make food change colors such as brown mushrooms changing to white mushrooms.
  • Biomedical research is when scientists use other organisms similar to the affected organism to find out how a certain disease affects the organism. For example, mice are used to find out how many diseases will affect a human.
  • Biomedical research is great because new treatments for diseases are made every day and should be tested. Biomedical research is a great way to do this. Something cool about biomedical research is that yeast can even be used in biomedical research.
  • I kind of have the opposite of a version of genetic engineering. Genetic Engineering is when you fuse an animal and the DNA of desired traits so you can make the best version of that organism. A cool thing about genetic engineering is that humans have used it to study diseases like Alzheimer's disease.
  • Gene therapy is when certain DNA is introduced to someone to treat a disease or disorder. For example, someone with Type 1 Diabetes could go to gene therapy to get an insulin DNA strand to help them with their diabetes. I am for gene therapy because there are so many types of diseases that can be treated using gene therapy. Something cool about gene therapy is that it only uses pieces of DNA and not the whole strand.
  • Stem cells are used to replace damaged or lost cells in the human body. For example, a damaged blood cell would be replaced with a stem cell that can turn into a normal blood cell and multiply further. Some people think that it is unethical to create these thing in a lab and them give them to humans, however, I think it is one of the coolest things we have accomplished. Something cool about stem cells is that there are some that are pluripotent which means that they can transform into any cell and some are multipotent which means they can only change into a few different cells. I hope you enjoyed my talks. Peace!
