Pip Meets the Convict
Storyboard Description
This is the scene at the beginning of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, when orphan Pip, after visiting his parents' gravestones, is confronted by an escaped convict. This storyboard is what ensues.
Storyboard Text
- This is Pip. As a little kid, he was unable to pronounce his full name, Philip Pirrup, so what he came up with was Pip. In a somewhat grim scene, young Pip is entering the graveyard in cold, dank weather.
- An orphan, here Pip is visiting the gravestone of his parents. They died of illnesses when he was too young to remember.
- Here lies Philip and Georgiana Pirrip
- Suddenly, Pip is seized by a mysterious, angry stranger, dressed in rags and wearing a leg iron. He harshly confronts Pip and orders he bring him food and file to saw at his iron with. We later find out that this mysterious strange is Abel Magwitch, an escaped convict.
- After his somewhat violent encounter, Pip returns home for the extravagant Christmas feast. Before he can bring the convict what he promised, he must help with the holiday preparation.
- While his dinner guests are distracted, Pip bolts, stealing bread, brandy, and a pork pie to give to the convict from his guardian and sister Mrs. Joe's cabinet. Lastly, he enters Joe's shop, where he steals the file.
- Later, finding the convict again, Pip brings him the food and file like he promised. Starving the convict devours it ravenously, then begins to voraciously file at his leg iron.
