SUSAN'S HOUSE, COASTAL VILLAGE OF KENT, ENGLAND
SETTING
At the beginning of the story, Ada and Jamie Smith live with their mother in a tiny, dilapidated flat (apartment) in London, England with a shared bathroom in the hall of the apartment building.
Ada and Jamie are taken in by Susan Smith, who lives in the countryside in a small village in Kent, England near the English channel. Susan has a cozy, well maintained house with indoor plumbing and acres of farmland with one pony named Butter.
The War That Saved My Life takes place between 1939-1940 during World War II in Europe. To prepare for war, England began sending children from cities (that were likely bombing targets) to more rural areas for their safety.
