JESUS IS BORN!
"And, while they were there, she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn." -Luke 2:6-7
Over two thousand years ago, King Herod ruled over the land of Judea, under the Roman Empire. A young woman named Mary was visited by the Archangel Gabriel who told her that God wanted her to be the mother of a very special baby. The baby would be the Son of God and would become the Messiah or Savior. Mary was to call the baby Jesus. Mary was betrothed to a man named Joseph. At first Joseph was surprised, but he was visited by the Angel and believed.
THE SHEPHERDS HEAR THE GOOD NEWS
"Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will bring great joy for all the people. Today a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord" -Luke 2:10-11
Angel Gabriel
Baby Jesus
Joseph and Mary had to go to Bethlehem to be counted for the census. Mary was far along in her pregnancy and it was a difficult and long journey. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the town was so full of people that there was nowhere for them to stay. Finally, a kind inn-keeper told Joseph and Mary that they could stay in his stable with the animals.
THE THREE WISE MEN MAKE THEIR JOURNEY
"After Jesus was born, some wise men came from the east. When the wise men saw the star, they were filled with joy. They went to the house and they bowed down and worshipped the child." -Matthew 2:1-11
Joseph and Mary stayed in the stable. That night, Mary went into labor and baby Jesus was born! Mary and Joseph wrapped their little newborn up in warm blankets. Since they had no cradle, they placed Jesus in a feeding trough filled with straw.
JESUS OF NAZARETH
"You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
"You shall love your God with all your heart."
Meanwhile, shepherds were herding sheep on the hills outside Bethlehem. They noticed an unusually bright star in the sky and were alarmed. An angel appeared to them and told them not to be frightened. A baby had been born in Bethlehem who would be the Messiah! The shepherds were filled with joy and went to see baby Jesus, telling Joseph and Mary what the angel had said to them.
In a land far away to the east, three wise men who studied the stars saw a bright star in the sky that they had never seen before. They believed it could mean that a great new leader had been born. They followed the bright star all the way to Bethlehem where they met baby Jesus, bowing down to worship him. To honor the child, they gave Jesus precious gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Mary and Joseph returned to Nazareth where they raised Jesus in their Jewish faith. Jesus displayed great wisdom from a young age. As a man, he began teaching about love, forgiveness, and mercy. He performed miraculous healing of the sick. Jesus' followers believed he was the Messiah and the son of God. They were later called Christians. Today, Christians celebrate Jesus' birth on Christmas every year on December 25th.
"For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life." -John, 3:16
