Anne of Green Gables tells the story of Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl who is adopted by an elderly brother and sister living on a farm called Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, Canada. The story is set in the late 1800s.
CLIMAX
“Well now, I'd rather have you than a dozen boys, Anne,' said Matthew patting her hand. 'Just mind you that — rather than a dozen boys. Well now, I guess it wasn't a boy that took the Avery scholarship, was it? It was a girl — my girl — my girl that I'm proud of.”
Anne Shirley is an 11 year old orphan. Her various foster parents have been neglectful and abusive. She found comfort in the world of make believe and is an exceedingly creative storyteller. Anne is ever hopeful and marvels in amazements at the natural world. By a fortunate mistake, Anne is taken in by soft-spoken Matthew and strict but fair Marilla Cuthbert on their farm Green Gables.
FALLING ACTION
Anne disrupts the Cuthbert's quiet life as she is boisterous, talkative, and naïve to social norms. She gets into trouble, but is also hard working, excels in school and "never makes the same mistake twice." Her quick thinking endear her to even the most skeptical residents. Anne becomes best friends with Diana Barry and develops a secret admiration for her nemesis Gilbert Blythe.
RESOLUTION
“We were born to be the best of friends, Anne. You've thwarted destiny long enough.”
Anne does very well in school with the unwavering support of Matthew and Marilla. She scores top of her class on her exams, allowing her to attend Queen's Academy in Charlottetown. She even wins a college scholarship. Unfortunately, amidst all the success and happiness, tragedy strikes when Matthew dies suddenly from a heart attack.
Matthew's death causes much uncertainty and Marilla fears she will have to sell Green Gables. Anne makes the selfless decision to stay at Green Gables to help Marilla and turns down her college scholarship.
In a surprising twist, Gilbert Blythe gives up his teaching position in Avonlea so that Anne may have it and thus be able to stay at Green Gables to help Marilla. Despite their disagreements in the past, the two are destined to be life long friends.
