  • Tom Robinson testifies:
  • Atticus and his client Tom Robinson along with Mayella Ewell and her father Bob go to court. Although Atticus didn't want Jem and Scout to be witnessing the trial, they still came and observed it in shock.
  • Tom Robinson is found guilty!:
  • GUILTY!
  • Mayella testifies under oath that Tom Robinson sexually assaulted her when he was at her house helping her break up a chiffarobe. She says that he punched and hit her and her injuries indicate that Tom would have done it with his left hand. Mayella was in tears, but her story didn't make any sense and was all over the place. It was obvious that she was lying.
  • Tom testifies that he walks by Mayella's place every day while going to work. Tom said she called him inside the house to help her, and she tried to kiss him. He claims he never beat or assaulted Mayella in any way. When Tom was a child, his left arm got caught in a cotton gin. As a result, he is unable to use his left arm. Therefore, how could he have possibly beat Mayella?
  • The all-white jury steps outside of the courtroom and comes to the conclusion that Tom Robinson is guilty. Judge Taylor declares him guilty, even though he did not commit the crime. Tom Robinson was sent to prison. He attempted to escape and was shot and killed.
