Brown Girl Dreaming is a memoir of Jacqueline Woodson’s life growing up between the North and the South during a time of racial segregation and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. A beautiful story that’s written in a unique style, Brown Girl Dreaming is perfect as a read aloud, small group text, or to use in a poetry unit.

I just can't stay here!
SOUTH CAROLINA
BROOKLYN, NY
Jackie was born in Columbus, Ohio and does not remember it much. Her parents disagreed about staying in Ohio, as Mary Ann was not happy there.
Jackie was very close to her grandparents, especially her grandfather. She loved the air, smells, and quiet life of Greenville, South Carolina.
After their mother found a place for them to live in the city, they made their journey North once again. At first Jackie did not like the city, but meeting her best friend Maria helped her to call Brooklyn home.
