Physical Traits:Wears a 47 pounds around his neck, a bag of bird shot, has an ear radio, eyes are bloodshot and teary because of the ear transmitter, pale and trembling. Character Traits:George is an everyman, a character most readers will understand and relate to. Smart and sensitive, George has been crippled by the government’s handicapping program. He makes intelligent remarks and thinks analytically about society, but his mind is stunted. George is mentally and physically gifted, but he is spiritually unremarkable. He believes that America in 2081 is a much better place than it was in the old days, when competition existed. George respects the rules, and he is all too willing to go along with government regulations that thwart individual freedoms and uniqueness.
Physical Traits:Has no handicaps, and tears are noticeable. An average American in an age when “average” has come to mean “stupid.” Character Traits:Hazel Bergeron is unintelligent, wishes to be the Handicapper General, and cries a lot, but doesn't know why. She also doesn't question the government. Hazel is a dim bulb, but she is also kind. Her kindness makes no difference. Her stupidity overwhelms her good nature, preventing her from recognizing the absurdity of her society, let alone doing anything to change it.
Physical Traits:Harrison is 7 feet tall, wears earphones, glasses, scrap metal, a rubber nose and black caps on his teeth. He has 300-lbs. of handicaps. Character Traits:Harrison Bergeron is age 14, a genius, an athlete, and plots to overthrow the government. His will to live as a full human being is too strong. The government calls Harrison a genius, but he is remarkable less for his brains than for his bravery and self-confidence. When he escapes from jail, he is utterly convinced that he will succeed in overthrowing the government.
Physical Traits:She wears an immense amount of weight and a terrible mask to cover up extreme beauty. She speaks briefly in a beautiful voice before apologizing and making her voice ugly. Character Traits:The Ballerina is more intelligent than the average person, a very good dancer and very beautiful. She goes against the government and is killed for it. She becomes Harrison’s empress. After Harrison removes her mental handicap, weights, and mask, she performs a lovely dance with him before being killed.
Physical Traits:Diana Moon Glampers is only in the story briefly, so we don't know exactly what she looks like. She is known as The Handicapper General. Character Traits: She is in charge of dumbing down and disabling those who are above average. Her minions enforce the handicap laws and create new hindrances for superior beings such as Harrison. Diana Moon Glampers kills Harrison and his empress and threatens to murder the musicians if they don’t put on their handicaps.
