- Evening on the beach
- Its a wounded white man!

- At home in Sadao's fathers room

- In the Kitchens
- It is clear what our master ought to do. My old masters son knows very well what ought to do. When the man was so near death why did he not let him bleed
- That young master is so proud of his skill to save life that he saves any life.
- Sadao and his wife Hana were on the beach when they saw a man flung out the ocean. He was an American and wounded, a prisnor of war. They thought it would be best to out him back in the ocean but he was wounded and neither could go through with that plan.
- A week after
- You are to come to the palace. The old general is in pain again.
- Is that all?
- Hana orders the servant Yumi to was the wounded man but she refuses so Hana cleans the man and Sadao enters the room and decides to operate on the man. Hana runs out the room on the sight of so much blood and had wretched. On her return she helped Sadao with the anesthesia.
- Meeting with the General
- It would be best if he could be quietly killed. I have my own private assassins. They are very capable - They make no noise and know the trick of inward bleeding.
- That perhaps would be the best, Excellency
- The servants did not hide their displeasure in having the American man Tom be sheltered in the household they work. Meanwhile Sadao had drafted a report to the police describing the whole matter and put the unfinished report in his secret drawer
- Tom's escape
- It is only inconvenient to have you in the house any longer
- It is the children of whom we must think. What will be their fate if their father is condemned as a traitor?

- The servants left together. When Hana got up, nothing was done, house was not cleaned and the food not prepared. She paid the servants and then prepared breakfast while Sadao helped with the children.In the afternoon, a messenger arrived who Hana mistook for an officer coming to arrest Sadao.
- What is it?
- The general promises that the assassins will get rid of the foreigner for Dr Sadao but Sadao waits three nights for the assassination to happen before eventually helping Tom to escape to the nearby island before he creates more problem for his household.
- Tom rowed to the island and was asked stay there till a Korean fishing boat passes by. The general was informed of his escape after the surgery and he made excuse for forgetting his promise by saying it was not a matter of patriotism. Sadao stood on the verandah at night wondering why couldn't he kill Tom.
