  • Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, when He said Poenitentiam agite, willed that the whole life of believers should be repentance.
  • Who does Tetzel think he is! This is unacceptable. Maybe this will help everyone get a better understand of how the church should really be.
  • Burning the Popes Decree:

  • In the spring of 1517, Tetzel's preaching at Jüterbog, near Wittenberg. When Luther heard about this, he opposed it and believed it went against everything the church represented.

  • After Martin Luther heard about the preaching and selling of indulgences, he knew the church and pope were just using them for money. So, he decided that writing the 95 theses would be a form of protest.
  • Luther Returns to Wittenburg:
  • In 1520, Luther burned the Pope/s decree with his students at a bonfire. In 1520, Pope Leo X issued a decree threatening Luther with excommunication unless he took back his statements. Luther did not take back a word. Instead, they threw the pope’s decree into the flames.
  • Start of the Protestants:
  • Come on now future, Protestants! We will make an Impact!
  • Luther was summoned to the town of Worms in 1521 to stand trial and to take back his statement. However, he refused. The Edict of Worms declared Luther as a heretic. No one was to give Luther food or shelter. His books were burned. However, Prince Frederick, for almost a year after the trial, he sheltered Luther in one of his castles. Luther translated the New Testament into German
  • Maybe this will help him realize that I don't give up. I fight for what I believe and being known as a heretic wont stop me!
  • In 1522, Luther returned to Wittenberg and discovered that his ideas were now being practiced. Started his own religious group called Lutherans.
  • THAT's HIM!
  • Why is everyone looking at me so weird?
  • The German princes that were loyal to the pope joined forces against Luther’s ideas and who still supported Luther’s ideas became Protestants. However, later on the term Protestant was then applied to Christians who belonged to non-Catholic churches.
