  • Father Pablo Pastells and Rizal engaged in a scholastic discussion on religion. This violent debate exposed Rizal's anti-Christian views and his resentment of the friars' injustices committed in the guise of the sacred religion.

  • How on earth can you continue to practice this religion that these invaders brought to us?

  • Rizal made the most of his time in Dapitan by spending a lot of it on developing his literary and creative abilities, working on civic and agricultural projects, conducting commerce, and writing letters to his friends in Europe.

  • On his 16 hectares of land, Rizal spent time planting significant crops and fruit-bearing plants (later, reaching as large as 70 hectares). Among many other things, he cultivated chocolate, coffee, sugarcane, and coconuts.

  • Rizal provided free medicine to his patients, the majority of whom were impoverished. He did, however, have wealthy patients who compensated him well for his excellent surgical skills.
