- Jaime helps his dad work on the farm by tending to the baby ducks, helping to them in a row. One hot, sunny afternoon while counting the 100 little yellow ducks, Jaimie counted 101. Jaimie thought "maybe there has always been 101 little yellow ducks." But Jaimie noticed number 101 was smaller than the rest and looked a little different.
- As Jaimie tends to the 100 little ducks they begin to play, splash, and swim. But poor little yellow duck number 101, who does not have webbed feet with a little beat cannot swim and play in the water. This little yellow duck just sits by the shore watching his siblings.
- Jaimie watches with worry as the 101 little yellow duck starts to feel bad thinking about why he looks different and can't swim like his siblings. Little yellow duck 101 starts to spend most of his day alone by the hay.
- Jaimie runs to dad yelling " I’ve tried to tend to the ducks and keep them in a row, but number 101 just won’t swim and grow!" The dad chuckles and says "the little yellow duck with a little beak is weak, because he is a little chicken!" The Dad tells Jaimie “he may look like the other yellow ducks, but he needs different care to be strong”.
- Jamie named the little chicken Chirpy and then Jaimie read books to learn how to care for little chickens. Chirpy quickly started to grow strong as his care was no longer wrong.
- Even though Chirpy could not swim, Jaimie built a dock for Chirpy and all his siblings to play on. Chirpy now spends his day playing and growing along side his siblings.
