- The place name for Auckland is Tamaki Makaurau. There were two tribes; Waitakere and Hunua, who did not get along and stayed out of eachothers ways. Most of the time.
- On moonless nights children of the tribes would sneak out and race silently to the other iwis land. They would gather tokens for evidence of their visit to show they were there. But one night, the son of waitakere Hui, returned home with Wairere the daughter of Hunua.
- Fury escalated when they realised the daughter had gone missing. A war began to form. But the Waitakere had a plan, the tohunga dug deep into the earth and gathered earths magical spells and resources. The magical spells left the Hunua tribe lying on the floor.
- Suddenly, the ground heaved and a chasm opened. Giant rocks flung into the air as the wrath of Mataaho, the guardian of the earths secrets, appeared. He was furious for the use of the earths magic. He woke Ruaumoko in furiousity. Then a hole opened and the tohunga fell into the hole while Mataaho melted him into earth becoming combined with earths magic. Waitakere fled but did not make it out.
- Years later, two Patupaiaiare sat looking at the volcanic field. Only left were Hui and Wairere.
- They are now passed into the underworld, remains of their family can be seen in the volcanoes of Tamaki . Soils left from the battle combined with abundent resources of the Waitemata and Manukau harbours. It is known as Tamaki Makaurau
