- In the very beginning of the story, everyone gathers in the plaza for the lottery to await the start of the drawing "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day." There is no real suspense or anything just everyone gathering and talking.
- Event 4Surprise
- Though sprinkled with a bit of comic relief, this moment is still filled with tension. After Mrs. Hutchinson finally arrives and the town starts their annual lottery. "Wouldn't have me leave m'dishes in the sink, now, would you /oe?" after this is when everyone starts grabbing slips for the lottery. Mr Summers says. "Now ill read the names- heads of families first- and the mean come up and take a paper out of the box. Keep the paper folded in your hand without looking at it until everyone has had a turn."
- This event is a mystery because this the moment that everyone in the crowd is questioning each other and asking about who got "it" (the slip with the scribble) Suddenly all the women began to speak at once saying, Who is it? Who's got it ? "Is it the Dunbars?"
- This event is surprise because after you learn who got the slip everyone seemed eager about and suddenly the whole atmosphere changes and you learn why the kids were collecting stones and then Mrs. Hutchingson gets stoned. "it isn't fair, it wasn't right." and then they were upon her."
