  • Before the accident, Phineas Gage was efficient and the best railroad construction worker of his crew. He had a nice personality and was social with his friends.
  • On September 13, 1848, he and his crew were setting down a railroad line. Gage was inserting explosive powder in a hole with an iron rod but the powder caused a spark which shot the iron rod towards Gage. It entered through his cheek and shot through his skull, injuring most of the frontal lobe of his brain.
  • The injury towards his frontal lobe was a detrimental effect on his behavior. His friends recognized that he was no longer the Gage they knew. He behaved inappropriately; he made rude comments without hesitation and became violent.
  • Gage’s story is a case study because his study is a detailed examination of the brain an individual over time.
  • Phineas Gage was the first case in Psychology that proved that even a minor injury to the brain can result in a personality change. His case encouraged Psychology to study how different parts of the brain can specialize in different functions.
