- Okonkwo is a wealthy respected warrior of the Umuofia clan. He brought honor to his village by beating Amalinze the Cat in a wrestling contest.
- Chapter 4
- One night, the town crier rings the ogene, or gong, and requests that all of the clansmen gather in the market. In the Mbaino village someone murdered their wife. Okonkwo travels there and tells them they must hand a virgin and young man.
- Chapter 5
- Okonkwo chooses to do differently from his father and work hard to make up his father's negative strikes against him. He succeeds in being a warrior, farmer, and family provider. He begins to receive get farm seeds and starts a farm.
- Chapter 6
- The clan decides to that Ikemefuna will stay with Okonkwo. Ikemefuna grows close with Nwoye, Okonkwo, and his children. Okonkwo ends up breaking peace during the week of peace. Due to his actions he has to sacrifice a goat, hen, and pay a fine of one length of cloth and one hundred cowries.
- Just before the harvest, the village has a celebration of Feast of the New Yam to give thanks to the earth goddess Ani. Okonkwo becomes angry and starts fighting with his second wife. The fight gets to the point where he shoots his gun at her.
- There's a wrestle match being held in the Ilo village. The wrestling begins with matches between boys the age of fifteen and sixteen. The son of Okonkwo's friend (Makuda) wins the first match. While the wrestling is going on Ekwefi speaks with Chielo.
