Storyboard Text

  • George and Hazel were watching television. There were tears on Hazel's cheeks, but she'd forgotten for the moment what they were about.
  • And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear.
  • Hazel had a perfectly average intelligence
  • The television program was suddenly interrupted for a news bulletin.
  • Ladies and Genlemen... Ladies and Gentlemen...
  •
  • The announcer finally gave up trying to say Ladies and Gentlemen and handed the bulletin to a ballerina to read.
  • 7 Ft.6 Ft.5 Ft.4 Ft.3 Ft.2 Ft.1 Ft.
  • Harrison Bergeron, age fourteen, has just escaped from jail, where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government, He is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous.
  • I am the emperor! Do you hear? I am the Emperor! Everybody must do what I say at once! I shall now select my Empress! Let the first woman who dares rise to her feet claim her mate and her throne!
  • Harrison and his Empress danced and floated, aiming to kiss the ceiling
  • It was then that Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General, came into the studio with a double-barreled ten-gauge shotgun. She fired twice, and the Emperor and the Empress were dead before they hit the floor.
  • In his story Harrison Burgeron, Kurt Vonnegut makes the point that no matter how hard society tries, people cannot all be made the same. The character Harrison represents how the free will and nature of man will try to overcome forced equality. The reason George could not overcome his handicaps is because deep down, he didn't want to. He was content with how society worked. Harrison and the ballerina wanted a change in society, and that's why the handicaps couldn't hold them down.
