Liesel was travelling with her brother and mother to Munich to meet her foster parents. Her brother Werner was sick and died on the train before arriving. Pg. 21 "It was January 1939. She was nine years old, soon to be 10. Her brother was dead."
Step 4: Liesel Steals Her Second Book
It was a gray day when Liesel arrived at the Hubermann's house. Although she had been excited to ride in a car she was nervous about meeting Rosa and Hans. Pg. 27 "Dein neues Heim. Your new home."
Step 5: Books Everywhere!

Liesel wakes up from a nightmare and Hans comes to comfort her. He finds her book and offers to read it to her. Page 64 "Then he read the title, with concentration, aloud: "The Gravedigger's Handbook." "
Step 6: Max Arrives
"How could he do this? How could he show up and ask people to risk their lives for him? How could he be so selfish?" Pg. 169
The Nazi's are burning banned books in the town square and Liesel steals a book out of the remnant of the fire. Page 121 "Liesel realized two things. ... 1. The shadows identity and 2. The fact that it had seen everything."
When Liesel picks up laundry from the mayor's house she was expecting to get in trouble. Instead, the mayor's wife brings Liesel to her library.

Max arrives at the Hubermann's house. He opens the door with a key that Hans had hid inside a book called "Mein Kampf".
