  • In the 2020 Election, 87% of Black voters voted for Joe Biden. As a matter of fact, for the past 85 years Black Americans have been loyal to the Democratic Party voting for every Democratic Presidential Candidate.
  • Rewinding to 1870 after the 15th Amendment was passed giving Black people the right to vote, most if not all the support went to the Republican party, or the party of Lincoln, the great emancipator.
  • Fast forward to 1936, Franklin Delanor Roosevelt was up for re-election after Americans suffering in the Great Depression for the last eight years. With the only viable option for the presidency to continue the NewDeal programs, the election was a landslide victory.
  •
  • However, since this election, Black Americans have consistently voted for the Democratic Party, but why?In the two examples of Lincoln and FDR, black voters voted for the person and not the party.
  •
  • The phrases “Black vote, White vote, Latino vote, etc” have become all too common in today’s media sphere marginalizing voters by race. This ideology of grouping voters by race has only created more of a racial and political divide. Minorities typically vote for the same party to empower their racial group. After years of being devoted to your party, it is time to ask yourself, what has your party done for you?
  • Political parties will gladly take your vote, but not serve your interests. While the values of the Democratic party may align with the beliefs of many people of color, their loyalty to the party is not based off common interest. It is rather based on social pressure to have a larger voice. But once again if your voice is not being heard and your party has left you and your people stagnant for centuries, then perhaps it is time for a change. Vote for the person – not the party.
