Jonas is upset that the community controls their lives. Jonas wants the ability to choose. " 'If everything's the same there aren't any choices! I want to wake up in the morning and decide things! A blue tunic or a red one?' " (pg. 97)

Jonas crashed and broke his leg and hurt his arm after the sleds runners couldn't cut/grip onto the ice. "Sideways, spinning, the sled hit a bump in the hill and Jonas was jarred loose and thrown violently into the air. He fell with his leg twisted under him, and could hear the crack of bone." (pg. 108)

While his friends are playing a game of war Jonas knows what war was really like and gets really upset that there friends don't know that war isn't fun. "In his mind, Jonas saw again the face of the boy who had lain dying on a field and had begged him for water. He had a choking feeling, as if it were difficult to breathe" (pg. 134)

Why can't we make choices I want to make the choice between a red tunic and a blue tunic
