Storyboard Text

  • Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft were celebrating their engagement with their family when an inspector tells them that a girl called Eva Smith had committed suicide by drinking bleach he wanted to ask them some questions.
  • Two hours ago a young woman was found dead in the Infirmary.
  • The Inspector questioned Mr. Birling first, and he admitted that he had fired the girl who died from his factory.
  • Yes, I do. She was one of my employees and then I discharged her...she'd had a lot to say - far too much - so she had to go.
  • I think you remember Eva Smith now, don't you Mr Birling?
  • The Inspector then moved on to talk to Sheila, who had got Eva Smith sacked from her new job at Milwards.
  • I went to the manager at Milwards and I told him that if they didn't get rid of that girl, I'd never go near the place again...
  • She had what seemed to her a wonderful stroke of good luck. She was taken on in a shop - and a good shop too - Milwards.
  • The Inspector then talked to Gerald, who was shocked to hear that Eva Smith and Daisy Renton were the same person, and admitted to cheating on Sheila with her.
  • I'm sorry Sheila. But it was all over and done with, last summer.
  • So she changed her name to Daisy Renton-
  • It is then revealed that Eva Smith asked Mrs Birling for help during her pregnancy, and the father of the baby was Eric.
  • Mrs Birling spoke to and saw her only two weeks ago...this girl was going to have a child.
  • Go and look for the father of the child. It's his responsibility.
  • You're pretending everything's just as it was before!
  • The Inspector then leaves, and the Birling family discuss what's happened, before realising that the Inspector wasn't really an Inspector after all...
  • We've been had.
  • Was he really a police Inspector?
