האפשרות לתלמידים לבחור ציטוט או סצנה אהובים מהספר מאפשרת להם לבטא אילו חלקים בסיפור הדהדו איתם ברמה האישית. באופן זה התלמידים יוצרים חיבור טקסט לעצמי המדגים את הבנתם את הדמויות ואת התפתחותן או את נושאי הרומן. התלמידים יכולים לשתף את לוחות הסיפורים שלהם לאחר מכן ולקיים דיון קצר על משמעות הציטוטים עבורם.

- "You can't keep the birds of sadness from flying over your head, but you can keep them from nesting in your hair" is one of the mysterious notes left on Phoebe Winterbottom's porch. Sal has grieved for her mother since she left many months ago. Her father believes that the road trip with her grandparents on the route Sal's mother traveled will help her come to a sense of closure and acceptance. Sal realizes that the note for Phoebe can apply to her own life and her need to continue living and finding happiness.
