An Inspector Calls

- The Birlings were celebrating the engagement between Sheila and Gerald Croft then an inspector arrives and interrupted the dinner with bad news.
- Two hours ago a young woman died in the Infirmary.
- The Inspector questioned Mr. Birling, and he admitted that he knew Eva Smith and fired her
- Yes, I do. She was one of my employees and then I discharged her...she'd had a lot to say - far too much - so she had to go.
- I think you remember Eva Smith now, don't you Mr Birling?
- The Inspector then moved on to talk to Sheila, who had got Eva Smith sacked from her new job at Milwards.
- She had what seemed to her a wonderful stroke of good luck. She was taken on in a shop - and a good shop too - Milwards.
- I went to the manager at Milwards and I told him that if they didn't get rid of that girl, I'd never go near the place again...
- The Inspector then talked to Gerald who learnt that Eva Smith and Daisy Renton were the same person
- She changed her name to- Daisy Renton
- After the inspector was done with Gerald he admitted that he cheated on Sheila but it was all done with last summer
- I'm sorry Sheila. It was all over and done with last Summer.
- It was then revealed that Eva Smith asked Mrs. Birling for help but she was rejected by Mrs. Birling who didn't like her manner and lies especially on her family name.
- I didn't like her manner. She'd impertinently made use of our name. She had to admit that she had no claim of the name, she wasn't married and her story told was quite false.
- Mrs. Birling spoke to and saw Eva Smith two week prior at the women's charity group
