- On June 27th, the whole town would be gathering for their once a year lottery. The gathering shows tension because when you start off reading the story you do not know why they are gathering. In the passage it says " Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets with stones, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones...". This shows tension because because you start to wonder why they are getting stones ready in their pockets and the n you start to feel the tension.
- The Stoning - Event 4
- When the town opens the papers it shows surprise because when all the men open the papers, the towns people get quiet and they start to get shocked. When Tessie says " Its not fair", It shows mystery because she starts to freak out and her saying its not fair makes it a mystery on why she is freaking out. The mystery is soon later reveled but for now in the story it remains as a mystery.
- The Hutchinson family opening the papers shows mystery because when they open the papers and Mrs. Hutchinson has the paper with the mark on it you do not know what is gonna happen. In the passage it says " a little girl whispered "i hope its not Nancy". This is showing mystery because whatever is going on must be bad because Nancy`s friends do not want her to have the paper with the mark.
- At the very end of the story there is the stoning. The stoning is how they keep the town population down. Every year someone randomly picks a paper with a little black dot on it and that means they are the chosen one. It does not matter if they are young or old they must get stoned to death.
