When war was declared the US surprised and attacked the Spanish ships anchored near the Philippines and brought land forces to the island
During the 19th century Cuba was controlled by Spain, during this time the Cubans tried to overthrow Spanish rule
American had millions of investments in Cuba, so they sent the battleship "Maine" to Cuba
In 1895 revolution broke out and Cuba were punished harshly by Spain
On February 15th 1898, the U.S. battleship "Maine" exploded and sank in the Havana Harbor, killing 250 officers and men were killed

Newspapers reported that this was act of war and demanded the U.S. react with military force, war was declared on Spain
Spanish forces in Cuba where better prepared but forced to retreat, US fleet destroys Spanish fleet when they retreated, US also captures Puerto Rico
In 1898 Treaty of Paris end the war, Cuba gains their independence against Spain, Puerto Rico and Guam ceded to the US
