A messenger tells Oedipus how Polybus and Merope are not his true parents. According to the messenger, a shepherd gave him Oedipus as an infant to which the messenger gave to the royal couple of Corinth.
Oedipus asks his servants to look for the shepherd who gave the infant Oedipus to the messenger.
Under duress, the shepherd testifies the truth to Oedipus' birth. The shepherd confirmed that Jocasta was the one who ordered him to leave the infant Oedipus in the mountains of Kithairon.
Upon hearing the truth, Oedipus storms out of the palace and heads into their quarters. He eventually discovered the corpse of Jocasta hanging from the ceiling. Later on, Oedipus blinds himself using the broaches from Jocasta's clothes.
Oedipus seeks Creon so that he may be exiled from Thebes. Creon tries to convince Oedipus to remain at the palace at least until they ask the oracles what to do about him.
Oedipus was banished from Thebes; the chorus chants his frightful fate as once a celebrated king turned to a pitiful man.
