Salva

  • Salva is a 11 year old boy who lives in Loun-Ariik in Southern Sudan. There is a war going on between the rebels from the southern part of Sudan and the government. As Salva sits in his class he hears gunfire.
  • Go quickly, all of you, Into the bush!
  • CRACK! POP-POP-CRACK!
  • Salva and His classmates run as fast as they can away from the fighting and the village. As he runs the only think he can think of is Where are we going? Where is my family? When will I see them again?
  • Where are we going? Where is my family? When will I see them again?
  • Salva is walking to a refugee camp in Ethiopia. But they have to walk through the the hot and dry Akobo desert. Salva is beginning to lose hope because he has just lost the two people he cared about the most in the group his friend Marial and his Uncle, They have both recently died on there journey to the camp. But Salva hears his uncles voice in his head A step at a time, just this day to get through. Hope and determination begins to fill Salva.

  • Hello, I am Salva and I am here to talk to you about a project for southern Sudan.
  • The group finally makes it to the refugee camp. Salva realizes what he will do with out his family. They would want me to survive... to grow up and make something with my life...to honor their memories. Little did Salva know, he would be in and out and traveling to different camps for 11 more years.
  • They would want me to survive... to grow up and make something with my life...to honor their memories.
  • Salva is now a young man. He has recently arrived at the Ifo refugee camp in Kenya. There are rumors spreading about three thousand boys and young men from the refugee camps being chosen to go live in America. Salva is so happy to hear this. He waits and waits and finally he is chosen, He is going to Rochester, New York. He gets on a plain and is on his way to America!
  • Would anyone like a drink, Coca-Cola? Orange juice?
  • Salva has gotten used to his new life in America. He had received a email from a family member telling Salva that his father is alive. He goes back to Sudan and sees his father. His father tells him that his family is alive back in Loun-Ariik. Salva is so happy but he can not come home until the war is over. Salva returns home and starts a project to help get clean water for southern Sudan.
