  • Through the course of officials determining what needs to be taught in education, the arts are being left out or cut drastically. This is forcing students to be molded in certain ways regardless of who he/she is (Greene, 2015). Art allows students to see and hear more experiences and to become more aware of what is happening in the world around them (Greene, 2015). The arts also help students become active learners who grow and become different individuals who find their own voice (Greene, 2015). 
  • Multi-Cultural Education
  • We are all different; therefore, our education should be diverse.
  • At this point in time, the annual number of teachers leaving the profession is higher than the number of teachers entering the profession. Retirees make up less than 20 percent of the educators leaving (Darling-Hammond, 2015). This is leading to many costly problems for schools. There are four main reasons educators are leaving the profession: salary, working conditions, teacher preparation, and mentor support.

  • I love my job! I feel respected and well prepared!
  • Teacher induction programs are very important in helping and retaining new teachers. Many U.S. programs are “sporadic, incoherent, and poorly aligned” (Wong, Britton, & Ganser, 2015, p. 247). They also heavily rely on one teacher mentoring another for a year. Other countries offer induction programs that are “highly structured, comprehensive, rigorous, and seriously monitored” (Wong, Britton, & Ganser, 2015, p. 247).
  • Schools should be a place where a sense of community and belonging is established. Students do not feel a part of the community when the curriculum is not diverse. It can also cause the achievement gap in different ethnic groups to widen (Gay, 2015). A lack of cultural community in schools does not help prepare youth for a multicultural society (Gay, 2015). Our world is a diverse world and students need to be prepared to enter it and function in it.
  • While there will always be issues to be fixed in education, schools are able to start solving some of them now. Implementing new induction programs and retaining teachers are cost effective measures that schools need to focus on. Not only will they help teachers become distinguished in their field, but it will also help teachers feel appreciated. Schools creating and offering art rich and culturally diverse curriculum will build confidence in students. It will also help students connect to their learning, which will increase retention.
