  • During the 11th century, the Seljuk turks were eager to expand their territory. So they took Syria and Palestine. The Seljuk Turks advance on Europe alarmed the Byzantine empire. the Christians worried for their holy land as the Seljuk Turks advanced. They also captured Anatolia.

  • Us the Seljuk Turks shall expand our territory!
  • Oh No! what about our Holy Land?
  • As a result of the oncoming threat of the Seljuk Turks, the emperor of the Byzantine Empire asked Pope Urban II to help him fend of the turks. The Pope convinced people that if they helped, they would gain an entry to heaven. People believed him and so started the Crusades.

  • Anyone who joins to stop the Turks and take the Holy Lands will gain an entry to heaven
  • The First Crusade was led by 4 nobles. Around 30,000 crusaders fought to regain Anatolia. In July, 1098 the Crusaders laid siege to the city of Antioch. After about 9, a traitor showed the way through a gap in the Antioch city walls. In July 1099, Antioch surrendered. Muslims and jews in the city were killed or sold into slavery. Victory to the Crusaders!

  • After the First Crusade, the Muslims started to band together against the Crusaders. They took Edessa in 1144. A German army was badly defeated by the Muslims. In 1148 50,000 Crusaders marched to Damascus(which was on the way to Edessa), only to be defeated by the Muslims. This ended the second crusade, victory to the Muslims!
  • The Second Crusade
  • Over the next few decades, the Muslims banded under the leader Salah al-Din. In 1187, the Muslims conquered jerusalem, this shocked the europeans and made the third crusade. A peace treaty was made after a long fight(details of the fight will be explained in King Richard's panel. This Crusade ended in a draw.
  • The Third Crusade
  • King Richard I of England led the crusaders against the Muslims(who were led by Salah al-Din) in a fight to regain Jerusalem. King Richard and his Crusaders forced the surrender of Acre, Palestine. Richard and Salah al-Din decided to do prisoner exchange, however Richard grew impatient and killed all of 2700 of his prisoners. Then Richard advanced on to Jerusalem, however both armies were to weak and a peace treaty was signed.

  • After the Third Crusade, many crusades continued on for 100 more years. None of the Crusaders ended up capturing Jerusalem from the Muslims. The Muslims on the other hand regained all of their lost territory. In 1291, the Muslims took Acre back(the last Crusader city). Victory to the Muslims(for the time)!
  • Later Crusades
  • The Children"s Crusade took place in 1212 and was organized by peasant kids from Germany and France. It was a fail, and none may have reached their destination(the Holy Lands).

  • The Reconquista was a series of war to take back Spain and Portugal from the Muslims. It was successful and in 1248, only Granada and Spain's coast remained Muslim territory.

  • Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand wanted to unite Spain as a Catholic Country. They used the Inquistion to help them with uniting Spain.

  • The Inquisition was a judicial body established by the Catholic Church to combat heresy and other forms of religious error. The Inquisition was very harsh and sometimes used torture to find out if someone was committing heresy and to maintain religious order.
