- I know you worked hard, but there's always room for improvement. Sometimes things don't go the way we want but we can always learn from it.
- Professor, I just don't understand how it could be possible for me to have gotten such a low grade on this paper. I worked so hard.
- I'm the professor, and I have given you the grade that I thought your paper deserved. It's not that you didn't try hard enough, your paper just didn't meet all the criteria.
- Yeah but it wasn't like I just put the least amount of effort possible into this paper. I really tried! I just think I deserve a fair grade!
- Think about how things would go if I simply graded everyone on their effort. Then someone could write about whatever they wanted and get an A. There must be some order to things.
- Okay, I know you're upset. I want to help you. What if I let you resubmit your assignment using the notes I gave you on how to improve it? It just needs to be submitted to me by Wednesday.
- But you don't understand! If I don't get a good grade in this class, then I won't be able to stay in the honors society and my GPA will be wrecked!
- Okay, just remember that it isn't the quantity of sources you have, but the quality. You can do it. I know how smart and capable you are.
