  • The Aztec ball game, or Ullamaliztli was a sports event that the Aztecs played. The court (Tlachtli) was in the shape of a capital i and was surrounded by 8-11 feet tall walls. Spectators would sit on top of the walls and watch the game. The goal of the Ullamaliztli was to get a 9 pound rubber ball to one of the 2 stone carved rings in the center of the capital i.
  • Players were unable to touch the ball with their hand and could only bump it in the air with their hips, head, arms, and elbows. The ball could not touch the ground.
  • If the ball were to touch the ground, touched by hand or if the players starting with the ball was unable to get past the middle line located in the middle of the court, it would all be counted as a foul.
  • Bets were common among the spectators of the ball game. They would use cocao beans as a currency. Many people enjoyed to bet on who would win on the next ball game.
  • Past victors and losers would be carved along the walls of the court and additional points would be awarded and remembered if good playes were done.
  • Matches would usually last a long time. Players had to wear deerskin guards to protect themselves from being harmed. Even with the protection, they were throwing themselves to eachother and would usually end up bleeding and badly hurt.
