In the Odyssey, Odysseus did complete his Hero's Journey on his way home to Ithaca from Ogygia.
After being on Ogygia for seven years, Hermes came to visit Odysseus to tell him the great news: that he could finally return home to Ithaca!
Once Odysseus had returned successfully to Ithaca, Athena hid his identity and he had to pretend to be a lowly beggar. Athena told him that he must not cause any unwanted attention, and to figure out how to face their upcoming challenges.
Once he was back to Ithaca, Odysseus had to fight off the suitors that were trying to take his place and steal his wife. He had to try and put his ego aside if he wanted to be able to kill the suitors off, once and for all.
After all the suitors had been taken care of, Odysseus had a moment where he could attack and murder the suitor's children, but instead, he pushes down his pride and puts down his weapon, which was the first time he ever passed on a fight.
Now that Odysseus is home, he is able to retake his throne, claim his glory, and begin to bring Ithaca back to what it once was. The city was overjoyed at Odysseus' arrival home, and were very greatful things would be back to normal.
Odysseus' Hero's Journey
By Abby Grech
Odysseus- I am here to tell you that it is time for you to return to Ithaca.
Thank you! It has been far to long- I must get back as soon as possible.
I hereby put down my weapons and will accept a truce, in order to save the integrity of Ithaca.
Odysseus, this will be your new identity for the time being. Keep this a secret and we will take it off before you fight the suitors
I will make sure no one finds out about me until the time is right.
Since all of you suitors have taken it upon yourselves to replace me, I must attack until you are all vanquished.
It is good to be back, son.
It is so good to have you back with us, father.
