  • Popeye's spinach farm
  • Spinach cells
  • Forest fires
  • Oxygen
  • Here, Popeye's spinach is being exposed to light energy from the sun. When this spinach gets enough sunlight, and enough carbon dioxide photosynthesis will start to occur and spinach will produce glucose.
  • Popeye's canned spinach
  • Glucose
  • The chloroplast which is inside of the spinach leaves produces glucose from sunlight but as a waste product it produces oxygen.
  • Canned spinach
  • Popeye noticed that there were forest fires nearby and the oxygen levels have decreased. He also remembered that if his spinach didn't get enough oxygen for cellular respiration they would die! He decided to cover his plants and add more oxygen to the air inside of his greenhouse. Now that there was more oxygen, his spinach could perform cellular respiration and his spinach would be good for his competition.
  • The competition
  • Best Canned Spinach
  • Now, Popeye's spinach has glucose and oxygen. The spinach leaves draw in oxygen so that glucose can be broken down and enter the mitochondria and perform cellular respiration. After the glucose and oxygen go through the mitochondria ATP is formed and the cell has more energy but carbon dioxide and water is formed as a waste product.
  • Oxygen
  • Popeye started to pick his fresh spinach and this year's harvest was very good. He filled his cans with water and placed the spinach inside of the cans and sealed them. Once he canned the spinach, fermentation started to occur, this caused carbon dioxide to build up inside of the cans.
  • Popeye forgot that carbon dioxide could build up inside of the cans, and the water inside became very acidic. Since the water had so much carbon dioxide inside, it did not taste very good and Popeye lost the competition. But, if he thought about cellular fermentation he could have won.In hopes of winning next year's competition, he placed the canned spinach next to the growing spinach so the carbon dioxide could help the plants photosynthesize better.
