Storyboard Text

  • Release
  • Accelerating
  • Terminal Velocity
  • At the point of release, the sky diver is not moving, so there is no air resistance.
  • Parachute opens
  • As the sky diver begins to fall, they quickly speed up because of the downwards pull of gravity. They are now moving, so air resistance begins to increase as well.
  • Terminal velocity
  • Eventually the sky diver reaches a point at which the upwards push of air resistance equals the downwards gravitational pull, so they stop accelerating. They are now at TERMINAL VELOCITY.
  • Safe Landing
  • When the parachute opens, air resistance increases. It is now bigger than the downwards force of gravity, so the sky diver slows down.
  • As the sky diver slows down, air resistance decreases again, until it is again the same size as the downwards pull force. So, the sky diver stops decelerating. They are now at a slower TERMINAL VELOCITY
  • The slower terminal velocity allows the sky diver to slowly drift down to the ground, landing safely.
