Storyboard Text

  • The story begins on the wilderness coast of Florida, where an expedition of Spanish explorers has settled. They came, motivated by riches and wealth, but have now had to resort to desperate measures to stay alive. This was the Bay of Horses.
  • Hey, you! Go get another horse for dinner!
  • Yes sir, right away!
  • Cabeza de Vaca, their leader, even resorted to trading with the local Natives and melting down weapons and armor to attempt to build a raft, which went against common Spanish practices at that time and was very demeaning. The Spanish felt very vulnerable.
  • Of course!
  • Please accept this in return for materials.
  • The Spanish then reflect back on the beginning of their expedition, when they made landfall near what is now Tampa Bay, motivated by the prospect of gold and walking the Coast of Florida. They then realized just how quickly their expedition had really unraveled.
  • Onward!!!
  • After finally finishing their raft, the explorers began to float and traveled for over a month! They continued to float until, finally, they reached the Gulf Coast of modern-day Texas. Upon their arrival, they were very soon spotted by natives, and were promptly enslaved.
  • Eventually, the Spanish began to become well-known among many tribes as very successful medicine men, and de Vaca and his men traveled from Tribe to Tribe, with many people seeing them as god-like figures due to their practicing of Catholic practices among tribes. The Spanish finally began to see these Natives as people instead of purely obstacles that needed to be overcome.
  • Cabeza de Vaca and the very few left from his expedition eventually found themselves meeting some merchants who agreed to take them back to Spain. They had been rescued! De Vaca was very active upon his arrival to Spain in advocating for more peaceful colonization strategies. He continued to live on in Spain for the rest of his days.
