- In a small, poor town in Venice, Italy a mother and her son lived quietly. Naturally, they were broke and didn't have many luxuries. However, the mother wanted nothing more than for her son to do great things and live happily. So she devised a plan...
- Figlio mio, non posso permetterti di restare qui e soffrire con me. Ho una sorella a New York che si prenderà cura di te. Devi andare a vivere con lei per avere migliori opportunità nella vita.(My son I cannot allow you to stay here and suffer with me. I have a sister in New York who will care for you. You must go live with her for better opportunities in life.)
- Mi dispiace amore mio ma questo è il meglio(I'm sorry my love, but this is what's best)
- Ma mamma! Voglio stare qui con te!(But Mama! I want to stay here with you!)
- And so with a heavy heart the boy did as his mother instructed. He packed his things and got on a train to the port that would take him to Ellis Island. He had to leave everything he knew and start a new life. However...
- When the boy passed through the immigration checkpoint he saw all new restaurants, beautiful buildings, advanced hospitals, and gorgeous homes. Nothing like back home!
- Having seen all these wonderful new things about his new home, he felt a little less sad leaving his mother and a little more excited to start his new life in the "Melting pot"! Content he knocked on the door of his aunt's house, ready to brave whatever challenges faced him next!
