" It was a lovely day. Kennedy would remember this later, how she could have said nothing, could have lain out there in that sunlight forever. Instead, she handed her mother the photograph " (Bennett 297). Stella and Kennedy speak for the last time and their final talk is very impactful. Stella continues to cling onto her lie about her past, but Kennedy doesn't believe her for a second. This interaction between the two leads to Stella returning to her hometown, Mallard, for the first time in 3 decades.
What actions do they take?
What are some key things they say.
" " You must have remember wrong wrong. You were still a baby." Her mother stepped forward, the cake behind her smoothed on the top and edges. " Come here, honey. Want to lick the spoon?" This was the first time Kennedy realized that her mother was a liar " (Bennett 270). Some key things said in this conversation is that Stella was born in Opelousas, and not Mallard. This is important because Kennedy instantly catches on to this, but can't remember the place and its name. This moment is a moment that splits Stella and Kennedy, leading their relationship down a rocky road.
" The hospital released Reese that evening. When Jude wheeled him outside, Kennedy glanced up, started to find the sky already cloaked in navy blue. For hours, she'd sat beside jJude in the waiting room, flipping idly through magazines, wandering down to the cafeteria for more coffee, or sometimes just sitting there, staring at that picture.. She called in sick to her show. Admitted the flu had gotten to her after all. And in spite of every reason she had to leave, she stayed there in that quiet hospital room " (Bennett 294). Kennedy staying at the hospital shows how far she has come, considering that this would go against everything that she was raised on. She was the girl who doesn't like black people, and has no black friends, but would chase after one specific dark girl like a fly on poop. Kennedy grows when around Jude, who she may be able to call her only friend.
