  • Well, we can thank the respiratory system for that. Let me explain...
  • What happens to the air we breathe? How does oxygen get to our blood?
  • That there is the nasal cavity, or your nose. This, with the mouth is where the air you inhale enters your body. Nose hairs help filter the air.
  • Next, the air travels down your trachea(windpipe). It is made of rings of cartilage, which help keep the airways open. Further along, it splits into two ways. These are called bronchi, and they go to each lung.
  • The bronchi split into further branches, called bronchioles. At the end of each of these are alveoli. Alveoli are small round air sacs.
  • Thats a lot of branches!
  • They have a few interesting features. The are round, which means they have a huge surface area. They are extremely thin, to make it easy for gasses to diffuse. They are also lined with mucus, which helps to dissolve the gasses. And lastly, they are covered with capillaries, which are small streams of blood.
  • The oxygen we breathe in gets diffused into the blood, and the blood releases carbon dioxide which we exhale.
