  • Prof. Valdez
  • Let's start our discussion. While presenting, please take down notes because we will be having a quiz tomorrow.
  • Good Morning everyone today we will be discussing How the Earth affects the Energy Budget on the Earth Spheres
  • The sun's heat and energy are distributed to the earth. It distributes light and heat, or solar energy, to the Earth's spheres, allowing a chance at life on the planet. The heat is transferred from one location to another. This flow of entering and exiting energy is known as the Earth's energy budget.
  • In order for the Earth's temperature to remain stable over lengthy periods of time, incoming and outgoing energy must be balanced. The energy budget at the upper atmosphere must be balanced. This condition of equilibrium is defined as radiative equilibration or radiative equilibrium.
  • Absorbed in the Atmosphere 23%
  • 29% Reflected
  • Absorbed at the Surface 48%
  • The atmosphere and the surface of the Earth together absorb 71 percent of incoming solar radiation. It absorbs 23 percent of incoming sunlight while the surface absorbs 48. The atmosphere radiates heat equivalent to 59 percent of incoming sunlight; the surface radiates only 12 percent and about 29 percent of the solar energy that arrives at the top of the atmosphere is reflected back to space by clouds
  • Absorbed in the Atmosphere 23%
  • 29% Reflected
  • Absorbed at the Surface 48%
